Our Method
A note on process.
Every review published in The Considered Palate follows the same protocol. Consistency of method is what separates criticism from opinion.
Environment
All tastings are conducted in natural light where possible, seated, with no competing flavours in the immediate vicinity. Strong coffee, toothpaste, and aromatic cooking are avoided for a minimum of thirty minutes prior. The tasting environment should be calm.
The Three-Pass System
Each product is tasted a minimum of three times before a review is written.
The Encounter establishes first impressions only. Texture, aroma, and immediate flavour profile are noted without judgement or conclusion. Nothing is decided here.
The Interrogation is conducted at least twenty-four hours later. Whether the first impression holds, or whether it was flattery, is the only question worth answering at this stage. The palate must be consulted again.
The Verdict is the critical tasting. Notes are taken in real time. The assessment is formed and does not change.
Where a product proves ambiguous, or where the experience resists easy classification, further passes are conducted at the reviewer's discretion.
Palate Cleansing
Between products, the palate is cleansed with still water at room temperature. Sparkling water is not used, as the carbonation introduces a textural variable. Tap water is acceptable. Melbourne's is quite good.
Scoring
The Considered Palate does not assign numerical scores. We use a scaled assessment system evaluating qualities specific to each product. Satisfaction is always measured. Further scales are introduced where the product demands it. A number out of ten would not survive contact with what we do here.
Procurement
All products are purchased at full retail price. Nothing has been provided by a manufacturer, distributor, or public relations representative. If that changes, it will be said plainly.
